About

kathak-bellsKathak

An ancient dance form native to northern part of India  originated within the Temples of India as a means of portraying epic tales of Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is one of the eight classical dance forms of India.

"Katha Kahe so Kathakaha"

The word Kathak is derived from Katha, meaning "The art of storytelling".  "Katha kahe so Kathakaha", is often quoted by Kathakars which literally means that one who tells the story is called a Kathak. Kathak has two aspects - Nritta and Nritya. Nritta is the technical aspect that corresponds to Pure Dance steps performed rhythmically and Nritya emphasizes Abhinaya, which is the expressive dance that corresponds to the mime performed to the song.

The scintillating footwork, pirouettes, recitation of dance verses on rhythmic patterns and timings with use of Ghunghroos in Kathak are noteworthy.

Kathak's current form is a synthesis of all the input it has had in the past: Influence of Mughal courts sits comfortably side-by-side with the Temple and Mythology.
